Conventional rotator cuff repair complemented by the aid of mononuclear autologous stem cells
Bone Marrow Aspirate Stem Cell Concentrate (BMAC) is a component of your bone marrow that contains growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins which have been shown to promote bone and soft tissue healing as well as reduce symptoms of pain related to injuries, tendinitis and arthritis. Some of these cells have the capacity to regenerate tissue, reduce inflammation and enhance wound healing.
This procedure is performed in the office. A bone marrow sample is typically taken from the back side of the pelvic bone. This is a sterile procedure, performed under a local anesthetic. Side effects can be localized pain over the pelvic bone. The bone marrow sample is “spun down” in a centrifuge machine, and the concentrated marrow cells are then injected into the problem area. Ultrasound is used for accurate placement. Patients should rest the treated area for 1-2 weeks and then can gradually return to normal activities usually by 6 weeks.
